"Becoming is not a finite destination, but rather an ongoing journey of self-discovery and growth." - Unknown

About Me

Hailing from Banff, Alberta, Canada, I've been fortunate to call some incredible places my home as I've traversed through life. My journey has been a tapestry woven with remarkable experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today. Growing up, I was immersed in the Hospitality Industry under the mentorship of my father, honing my skills within full-service hotels and gaining insight into property management and revitalization. Venturing into my twenties, I obtained my Class 1 Commercial Driver's License, embarking on extensive travels across Canada and the USA while navigating the highways behind the wheel of a semi-truck. In 2012, the seeds of BARCs Rescue were sown around a humble kitchen table, blossoming into a thriving charity under my stewardship over the next decade, during which we saved the lives of over 7000 dogs from dire circumstances. I retired from BARC's in 2022 passing the torch to the board of directors. During my time at BARC's I embarked on a new chapter, transforming an old mining camp in Jaffray, BC, into The Hideaway, a bustling Air BNB until the challenges of Covid-19 impacted our operations in 2021. Continuing my journey, I pursued further education, obtaining my OFA3 First Aid Medic Course in 2019, which led to contract work at the Teck Mine in Sparwood and a stint with BCEHS. I am now ready to embrace new opportunities and continue the evolution of my life's narrative.

Inside The Hideaway

   THE HIDEAWAY -  Jaffray, BC

In 2016, I ventured to Jaffay, BC, where I assumed stewardship of an abandoned mine camp transformed into an AirBNB. This expansive property boasted a commercial kitchen, 20 cozy cabins, and three sprawling 22-bedroom bunkhouses, alongside numerous other structures. The Hideaway, as it was affectionately known, became a beloved retreat for travelers seeking solace in the heart of nature. Unfortunately, the unforeseen challenges brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic led to the closure of The Hideaway in 2021, marking the end of an era for this once-thriving haven.

A Dog Rescue Is Born

Debra's journey as a lifelong learner began long before the inception of BARC’s. Recognizing that knowledge is power, she embraced learning as an essential pursuit. Her involvement in the No Kill movement was catalyzed by attending the No Kill Conference in Washington DC, where she immersed herself in the intricacies of shelter management and dog behavior. Under the mentorship of Robert Cabral of Bound Angels, a renowned specialist in shelter dogs, Debra honed her understanding of canine psychology and basic training techniques. Her commitment to learning culminated in graduating from the University of the Pacific in No Kill Shelter Management in 2015. It was a pivotal moment when Debra, confronted with the stark realities of animal welfare disparities between the Southern USA and her home in Canada, resolved to make a difference. Thus, BARC’s Rescue was born out of her determination to enact change. Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, Debra persevered, driven by the belief that as she gained knowledge, she could better serve the animals in need. Fast-forward to today, BARC’s Rescue continues to stand as a beacon of hope. Having saved over 7000 dogs and bringing joy to countless families, Debra's legacy continues as she retired from the rescue ln 2022 and handed in over to her Board of Directors. Debra's advocacy extends beyond breeds or appearances, championing the rights and welfare of all dogs indiscriminately. Her journey underscores the transformative power of education, resilience, and unwavering compassion in making a tangible difference in the lives of animals and communities.
